What started as a simple idea has grown into something much bigger inside Day Services.
Goodwill Goodies began with a popcorn machine sitting unused in the kitchen. With a bit of creativity, Sarah Larios, Day Services Manager, saw an opportunity. Why not make popcorn and sell it to the administrative staff as a way to support mission services? What began as a small Thursday effort has since turned into an ongoing initiative that blends purpose, skill-building, and community impact.
Today, popcorn is popped and sold downstairs within Day Services, with participants actively involved in every step of the process. From preparing batches to interacting with customers, clients are gaining hands-on experience in food handling, money management, and customer service, skills that directly translate to future employment opportunities.
Of course, the popcorn itself has become a highlight. ‘Grandma’s Caramel Corn’ remains the top seller, alongside the ‘Classic Butter’ flavor. But the team doesn’t shy away from creativity. They’ve tested a variety of options, including ‘Celebration Corn’ with vibrant colors, ‘Red Hots’, and ‘Chocolate and Vanilla’, they have also been testing a chocolate and peanut butter flavor. Trying new flavors has become part of the fun and part of the learning.
Beyond the product, the impact is meaningful. All proceeds stay within the Day Services program at Goodwill Industries of Kansas, helping fund activities and enhancing experiences for participants. It’s a full-circle effort where the work being done directly supports the people doing it.
Looking ahead, the vision for Goodwill Goodies continues to grow. The team hopes to expand beyond popcorn into baked goods like brownies and cookies, with a long-term goal of eventually offering products to the broader community, one batch at a time.
