Gage D., a high school senior, had been searching for ways to gain more independence. After being introduced to the Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-ETS) program by a teacher, Gage found an opportunity to participate in work-based learning over the summer.
Through Pre-ETS, Gage and his family connected with Goodwill, where he received job preparation and placement support. This past summer, Gage gained valuable retail experience working at a local hardware store near the Wichita area. His confidence skyrocketed, and his communication skills improved remarkably. The dedicated staff helped him thrive, and he learned a great deal along the way.
“He did great; we really enjoyed having him,” said Morgan W., Manager at True Value Hardware.
Looking ahead, Gage hopes to attend college and eventually live in a group home. Thanks to his work-based learning experience, he has developed a newfound sense of independence. Having always aspired to work, this opportunity allowed him to achieve that goal while being treated as an equal.
“It has been a life-changing experience, helping him grow in independence and self-confidence,” said his mother, Amy.
The Goodwill team is incredibly proud of Gage’s accomplishments and looks forward to seeing where his journey takes him next.
