For many high school students, graduation marks the start of new possibilities and new challenges. For one recent graduate in Wichita, the journey has been shaped by both courage and community.
After graduating high school in May 2024, Eden G. enrolled at a local community college to pursue early childhood education. At the same time, she began working through her own challenges with social anxiety. She knew she needed a space where she could take small steps toward building confidence.
After a referral, Eden chose to join Goodwill as an intern through the Work Based Learning Experience Pre-ETS Transition program.
Her internship took her to Botanica’s Butterfly House in Wichita, where she greeted guests, shared fun facts, and helped create an inviting atmosphere.
“The best part is getting to work with the butterflies,” she shared. “I enjoy the calm workspace and flexible atmosphere. This experience has helped me find a place that fits my goals and challenges me as a person to do better.”
The transformation has been remarkable. She’s taken on new responsibilities; assisting with educational activities, preparing for special events, and guiding visitors through the butterfly habitat. She has also reached personal milestones, from driving independently to taking college classes, working 20 hours per week, and preparing to move into her first apartment this fall.
Her future vision is clear: a career working with children that also integrates her artistic and creative gifts. Along the way, she’s discovered her own voice and gained confidence in sharing it.
At Goodwill, we often say that work is more than a job, it’s a chance to discover purpose. Her story is a reminder of how our mission comes alive when community partners, donors, and supporters come together.
Every time you shop or donate at a Goodwill store, you’re helping make experiences like Eden’s possible. Your support fuels programs that give people not just job skills, but confidence, independence, and brighter futures.
