Book Club

Despite having quite an extensive and ever-growing “to read” pile of books in my apartment, I still manage to feel like I need to add more to my collection. I’m sure I’m not alone in that as it seems to be common among my fellow avid readers. While I love checking out books from the library, there are some that I want to add to my personal collection, and that can add up cost-wise over time.

Lately, though, I’ve hit the jackpot in book finds at Goodwill, making my reading obsession more accessible! It requires a little patience to peruse the bookshelves at Goodwill because they have so many books to look at, but with that patience sometimes comes the reward of finding new (or new to me) titles at an affordable price ($.99 for paperbacks and $1.49 for hardcovers). There’s a little something for everyone too, so if you or a book lover in your life is looking to add to a collection, here are some things you just might find:

For the Fantasy Fiend:

Since I buy a lot of books that fall under the category of ‘Fantasy Series’ or ‘YA Fantasy Series’, I try to find each book in the series at Goodwill to save myself some money. This often means buying titles out of order and filling in the gaps as I find the missing books in the series. I really enjoyed, “I Am Number Four” when I read it, so when I saw a copy at Goodwill I thought it would be fun to start a new series collection! Love that I was able to get it at the Goodwill in Derby for a steal!

For the Nonfiction Reader:

Nonfiction is not my favorite genre to read, but maybe it is yours. There are so many great nonfiction finds at Goodwill (these were all found at the Maize Road store). When I do read nonfiction, I tend to gravitate towards memoirs and books about topics I find interesting. Such was the case with these three find: I read “Becoming” when it was originally released and loved getting the perspective of the Obama’s ascent to political office from a behind-the-scenes viewpoint. I have not yet read “Dear Girls,” but I think Ali Wong is hilarious so I’m looking forward to it. Finally, “Irresistible” addresses the addictive nature of social media and I am excited to read it because I’m fascinated by anything that talks about aspects of human nature and why we are drawn to certain things!

For the Book Club Baddie:

I have been fortunate enough to be a part of a book club that has been consistently meeting for the last 7+ years. Over time I’ve been exposed to so many different and interesting titles that I may never have picked up if they had not been a part of our reading picks. I was thrilled to find some titles at Goodwill on Maize Road that facilitated some of the most interesting discussions in our Book Club, plus one new to me title that I can’t wait to read. “All The Light We Cannot See,” “Where the Crawdads Sing,” and “The Great Alone,” were all contemporary fiction finds that are beautifully written, though at times brutal, and they led to some great discussion amongst our group. I’m a fan of Rainbow Rowell, but haven’t yet read “Landline” so I’m looking forward to checking it out!

There are so many different genres represented across the shelves of Goodwill, if you are looking for your next read (or are just adding to your ever-growing collection like me), Goodwill has something for you! Happy Hunting!
