Thrifting 101

image description

Hey, ya’ll! I am so excited to write a guest blog for Goodwill Kansas and hope I am of help to you in your thrifting adventures! Whether you are looking to save money, to find unique items or just love the thrill of the hunt, I have some tips for your thrifting adventures!

I love to share my treasures on social media, with a home that is 95% thrifted/secondhand and a closet that is 50% thrifted (My goal is 75% by the end of the year!) the thing I hear the most is “You always find amazing things! I never find ANYTHING good when I thrift!” While I consider thrifting an art form, there are definitely some tricks and tips to get you started finding treasures!

1. Be consistent!

You are not going to find everything you’re looking for in one store, in one day. Visit your local Goodwill frequently, rotating stores to find more treasures! New items are put out daily, so the more you frequent your Goodwill stores, the better your chances of finding what you are looking for!

2. Be patient!

If you are looking for something specific, it may take a while to find it! The “have to have it now” mentality is your worst enemy when shopping secondhand. Good things come to those who wait…and search!

3. Make a list!

Keep a list of things you are looking for, with several columns. I put my personal wish list into three columns. I have my “now” items, which are trendy, one-time buy or seasonal items I am looking for, my “always” items, items I am ALWAYS on the lookout for and a “bucket list” column, which are generally name brands that I would love to find thrifting rather than paying retail! These lists will change frequently depending on what you find and new things that come up that you are looking for!

4. Shop all seasons!

I know it’s hard to think about sandals when there is snow on the ground or sweaters when it’s 100 degrees outside, but searching for all seasons all year round will be of great benefit to you! While nobody else is searching for fall items in the summer, you can snag some of the best pieces! Retail stores and fashion magazines are generally one season ahead, so you can search upcoming seasonal trends to keep your eye out for!

I hope you are able to use these tips to get you started! Stay tuned for more tricks and tips to help you on your journey! Value the hunt!
