Happy October Goodwill friends! Even though it’s still pretty warm here in Kansas, I hope you are enjoying all the fun things that fall has to offer – including getting your Halloween costume ready! Goodwill is, of course, my favorite place to put together a fun outfit for all those fall parties, so this month, I wanted to show you a couple of costumes that I put together for myself, and also some ideas for costumes for your furry friends.
With all the comic book heroes coming to life on the big screen, I decided to assemble some super hero looks for my costume ideas this year.
First up: Super Mom! With backpack and coffee in hand, this superhero can take on anything that the family schedule can throw at her! To make the costume, I started with a large green t-shirt and cut it down to fit like a tank-top for the shirt. I used hot glue and glitter to make the “M” monogram on the front, and I used a scrap from the t-shirt to make a matching mask. I paired a mini skirt with some sweet sneaker tights and some black patent pumps to finish this look.
My next super hero look started out as a super-secretary look with a few homages to the office life but kind of morphed into more of a super-model superhero by the time the look came together. I started with a vintage gold shimmery blouse and paired it with a royal blue pinstriped mini skirt. I added the grey tights and knee high boots, then threw in some pearls and a matching blue cape. A painted blue mask finished the look and I was pretty happy with how it turned out!
My last look ended up more reminiscent of a villain than a hero – but fun nonetheless! The shoes were my beginning inspiration for this look – then the yellow tights! I added in a splash of color with the pink top and a fun pattern with the black and white striped mini skirt. You can’t see it very well in this picture, but the cape I have on is actually a repurposed pillow sham that I found in linens!
For my puppy friends, we had a little fun creating some easy costumes with kids clothes and t-shirts. My sister let me borrow her two cute pugs for the shoot, and one of them we dressed as a snappy gentleman with a boys dress shirt and a tie made to fit. The girl’s outfit was a snap with a baby tutu and a glittery headband that doubled as a collar. There is so much room for creativity if you have smaller dogs to dress up! You could try working with girls dresses, or lots of little hats! Another idea I saw that was cute was to use kids’ footie pajamas (the stretchier the better). If you have a larger dog and you’re trying to save a little money on costumes, shop the t-shirt aisle at Goodwill! For a $1.99, we made a quick cute pumpkin costume for my mom’s corgi pup, but again – let creativity be your guide! You could buy a basic t-shirt then add feathers, sequins, tie-die, puff paint and so much more to customize your costume AND save some money too!
Happy shopping friends! Catch you next month!
