Whether it’s family get-togethers or office parties, we all find ourselves scrambling to put together a cute outfit for the holidays, and if you’re like me, your default setting is; Holidays = Red and Green clothes. But the fashion world is giving us a break this year! Colors are out and sparkle is in! Metallics to be specific. And don’t take it from me – I got this one on good authority Real Simple and In Style Magazines both write in their current holiday issues that you can “shine in sophisticated silver and gold” this season.
So now let’s take this sweet deal a little further and save some money! When I hit the racks at Goodwill this month, metallics were not hard to find. I scored a cashmere pair of Rock and Republic jeans with a dark gold metallic sheen, and a vintage gold-thread turtle neck. I paired those with a gold jeweled cuff and some sparkly gold peep-toe heels, and had a finished, chic and simple look for a holiday party or get-together. I also found a beautiful gold and turquoise statement necklace by J.Crew for just $8.99! The necklace is really cute as an addition over the gold sweater, but I actually kind of like just the gold cuff with the outfit – simple and chic!
If you take on the challenge of looking for some new holiday duds at Goodwill, here’s a few tips for putting together a metallic outfit:
1. Don’t be afraid to mix metallics – pair gold and silver together, or work in a little copper. Have fun adding in some different types of sheens and textures with accessories and shoes.
2. You don’t have to be metal from top to bottom – finding just an accent of metallic fabric or jewelry can make your outfit sparkle too. Even though it’s winter in Kansas – go shop the tank top and short-sleeve blouse sections for a pop of sparkle, and pair it with a black or muted sweater or jacket.
3. Look for shine – save yourself time when you look through the racks and let your eye catch all that glitters. Pull just those pieces to look at until you have the piece you want to build your outfit around, then work from there.
I’ll be honest, the nostalgic romantic in me will always secretly want a Christmas Red party dress every year for the holidays, but learning to mix it up with metallics this year was a lot of fun. So be bold, be daring, be metallic!
